Mihama-cho (town), Fukui Prefecture, Japan, is promoting the development of a ship powered by solar electricity (solar ship) as a pleasure boat used on Mikata Five Lakes.

The solar ship can carry 40 people and is equipped with a propeller driven by (1) a storage battery for propulsion and (2) electric motor. The ship sails at 5 knots in the low-speed range and 13 knots in the high-speed range.

Also, on the roof of the ship, there are 2kW of solar panels that are used as a supplementary power source.
