NEDO Tests Barge-type Floating Offshore Wind Power Generation System

New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) installed a barge-type floating offshore wind power generation system off the coast of Kitakyushu City (Fukuoka Prefecture) and in a sea area with a depth of about 50m.

NEDO started a verification test of the system May 21, 2019. Its rated output is 3MW. The test will be conducted until fiscal 2021 in the aim of realizing a low-cost floating offshore wind power generation system.

An upwind-type wind turbine having two blades was mounted on a steel-based barge-type float. It is Japan's first barge-type floating offshore wind power generation system made for a verification test.
