GPI, HEPCO Team for Offshore Wind Power Generation Projects in Hokkaido

Green Power Investment Corp (GPI) and Hokkaido Electric Power Co Inc (HEPCO) signed a partnership agreement on an offshore wind power generation business in Ishikari Bay Aug 8, 2019.

GPI is a renewable energy developer based in Minato-ku, Tokyo. Ishikari Bay is considered as a promising area for the development of wind farm because of its wind conditions and port functions. The two companies aim to expand their wind power generation businesses.

Based on the partnership agreement, GPI and HEPCO will cooperate to consider the development, investment and management of (1) the "Project to Install and Manage Wind Power Generation Facilities in Ishikari Bay New Port," for which Ishikari Bay New Port Authority called for proposals from the public in the port area and GPI made a successful bid, and (2) an offshore wind power generation project in a general sea area of Ishikari Bay. They will clarify specific items to be considered in future negotiations.

The offshore wind power generation project in Ishikari Bay will contribute to spreading the use of renewable energy in Hokkaido and regional/economic development in the project area.

GPI and HEPCO will help each other to realize the project. Specifically, GPI will take the initiative in development and construction, and HEPCO will help GPI in terms of technologies and negotiations with local communities by using the knowledge that it accumulated as a general energy company.

GPI has been actively developing renewable energy-based power plants including "Tsugaru Wind Power Plant" (output: 121.6MW, scheduled to be completed in 2020) in Tsugaru City, Aomori Prefecture, and a solar power plant in Futtsu City, Chiba Prefecture.

Also, HEPCO has been making efforts to increase the total capacity of renewable energy-based power sources connected to power grids and engaged in the development of renewable energy-based power sources. For example, it increased the outputs of existing hydraulic power plants, developed small- and medium-scale hydraulic power plants and participated in a woody biomass power generation project.
