The Aomori Branch of East Japan Railway Co (JR East) announced July 18, 2019, that it has built a 1.99MW solar power plant at the Aomori Branch of its Morioka Rail Yard.

The company started operation of the plant, "Aomori Ishie Solar Cell Power Plant," Aug 1, 2019.

By using about 33,000m2 of unused storage tracks, 11,904 solar panels were installed. The plant is expected to generate about 2,200MWh of electricity, which is equivalent to the amount consumed by 600 households, per year.
