2.3MW Solar Plant Withstands Heavy Snow but Panels Broken With 'Clams'
Clover found effective against earth erosion, rainwater, but ineffective against weeds
The "Exeo Matsue Solar Farm," a mega- (large-scale) solar power plant with a solar panel capacity of about 2.3MW and a PV inverter capacity of 1.99MW, is located in the mountains on the way to Lake Nakaumi to the east of JR Matsue Station by a village forest in Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture, Japan (Fig. 1).
Kyowa Exeo Corp, which is engaged in telecom-related infrastructure, developed and operates this power plant. The company is approaching the power generation business in addition to engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services for solar power plants, for which its knowhow in the mainstay business can be leveraged. Kyowa Exeo runs solar power plants at more than 10 locations in Japan (See related article 1, 2, 3).
Kyowa Exeo designed the mega-solar plant in Matsue by itself and entrusted construction to Satohgumi Inc (Matsue City). A total of 8,784 single crystal silicon solar panels (265W/unit) of Sharp Corp and two 665kW-output and one 660kW-output DC 1,000V-supported PV inverters of Toshiba Mitsubishi-Electric Industrial Systems Corp (TMEIC) were adopted (Fig. 2).
Kyowa Exeo loaned about 25,000m2 land in Asakumicho, Matsue City, as a project site. The south-facing sloping site was suitable for solar power generation; however, it was Category 1 farmland, which had originally been categorized as an Agricultural Promotion Area (See related article 4). The company overcame such circumstances and constructed the solar power plant, which started selling power in November 2015.
Despite fluctuations in monthly results, power generation has continued to total about 2,540,000kWh per year without large swings during the last four years or so since power selling began. Compared with the initial estimate from the time the project was being planned, it is reportedly an upswing of about 5%.
