City Gov't, University Team Up to Supply Renewable Energy-derived Hydrogen

The government of Iki City (Nagasaki Prefecture) and the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology (RCAST, The University of Tokyo) formed a partnership agreement in the aim of increasing the introduction of renewable energy, utilizing renewable energy, reducing the use of carbon, realizing a hydrogen-powered society, creating a sustainable community, etc Feb 7, 2020.

The government and RCAST will engage in the demonstration test of energy management using hydrogen. In the test, they will aim to stably supply energy by using renewable energy-derived electricity to produce hydrogen and store it. At first, they will use solar power generation facilities, planning to use offshore wind power generation in the future.

The government will receive advice from experts at RCAST. They are currently considering the specific contents, scale, etc of the demonstration test, planning to decide them within March 2020.

In Iki City, about 9MW of solar power plants and about 2MW of wind power plants have been introduced so far, and the ratio of renewable energy-derived electricity to all the electricity provided to the city is less than 10%. The city plans to expand the introduction of renewable energy in the city through the demonstration test, aiming to increase the ratio to 24% by fiscal 2030 and 100% by fiscal 2050.

According to the city government, it expects to solve various social issues of the city and cooperate with RCAST for creating a sustainable community by using knowhow that RCAST has built up through various researches in a wide variety of fields including the energy field.
