20MW generated using RDF
From Minookicho in northern Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan, on the coast of the Seto Inland Sea, Tomonoura, which is known as a scenic spot, and various-sized islands in the sea can be clearly seen. The town area is reclaimed land that began to be developed in the 1970s, and it plays a part in the Setouchi industrial area.
Fukuyama City has established this area as "Fukuyama City Next-generation Energy Park" and set up "Fukuyama City Recycle Plaza" (Fig. 1) as a hub for environmental study, integrating renewable energy- and recycling-related facilities there. The city is approaching environmental educational activities such as with bus tours in the Next-generation Energy Park for citizen groups.
The Chugoku Electric Power Group runs two mega- (large-scale) solar power plants with a total panel capacity of over 12MW in this park, which has become the largest-class solar power generation facility in Hiroshima Prefecture. Moreover, "Fukuyama Recycle Power Plant," where "refuse-derived fuel (RDF)" including biomass (waste product biomass) is burnt and fused in a gas melting furnace to drive steam turbine power generators using exhaust heat, is also located in the same park and has a power generation capacity of about 20MW.
Hiroshima Prefecture and JFE Engineering Corp, among others, invested in the Fukuyama Recycle Power Plant while seven cities and two towns including Fukuyama City have participated in the project. General waste discharged from these nine cities and towns is processed into RDF and transferred as power generation fuel to the power plant in Minookicho. The project started in 2004 and was initially slated to last through March 2019, but has already been extended for five more years (Fig. 2).
