Idemitsu Kosan Co Ltd, Ube Industries Ltd and JGC Corp established a study group aimed at developing a technology to collect and immobilize CO2 emitted from thermal power plants, factories, etc and convert it into resources.

The establishment of the study group, "CCSU (Carbon dioxide Capture and Storage with Utilization) Study Group," was announced June 10, 2019.

The concept of the development of the new technology is to "utilize industrial waste containing calcium, etc, make it react with CO2 for carbonating it and turn it into a high-value-added material."

The residue after extracting carbonate and metal ions will be utilized as resources such as construction, civil engineering and industrial materials.

The project is an industry-university effort participated in by multiple universities. After two years of basic research, a verification test will be conducted with an aim to commercialize the new technology in 2030.
