NGK Insulators Ltd announced April 15, 2019, that it has delivered a sodium-sulfer (NAS) battery for power storage to Toto Ltd's Kokura Physical Distribution Center (Kitakyushu City) and started operation of the battery in February 2019.

The battery will be used for leveling the load on a power grid as well as for a project for establishing a VPP (virtual power plant) that Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) is promoting.

The rated output and rated capacity of the NAS battery are 600kW and 3.6MWh, respectively. It is expected to reduce the cost of electricity purchased from a power company by charging the battery during nighttime hours and discharging it during hours when there is a high demand.
